It’s never too early to start thinking about a career in fashion.
The courses developed over the past 3 years at MHCA offer students the insight and fundamental skills that can contribute to success down the road through innovative and comprehensive course of studies in fashion art and fashion design.
The Fashion Art program is designed to help students become aware of and skilled in identifying and communicating fashion trends by doing research and reporting through written, verbal and virtual fashion trend presentations.
Students learn invaluable resources such as trend services, international fashion shows, seminars and trend reports all of which provide much more meaning and desired results when designing their own fashion collections.
Throughout this course, students become aware of how fashion trends are influenced by popular figures in our culture and how trends are often cyclical taking cues from decades past and reworking them to fit modern tastes. And they will learn how these trends effect consumer behavior.
In a fashion studio setting, students learn how to collaborate creatively within a team environment, how to delegate tasks within their team while designing their collections, and how to creatively convey their ideas. Student will be able to identify the importance of managing their time while working towards a deadline.
Each student will learn how to draw the fashion figure and how to illustrate and render their designs while building their own fashion collections.
The Fashion Design course offered during the second semester is for students to take the designs they created in Fashion Art and translate them into actual garments.
A class trip into New York City’s garment district is made for students to experience, first hand, the sourcing and purchasing of fabrics and trims to execute their designs.
Fashion Design students are taught the basics of sewing on a machine by creating simple stitches, seams and hems. They learn how to cut, pin, shape and manipulate fabric on the dress form, and will discover draping techniques to create paper patterns for their designs.
