I am going to use my YouTube platform to win an pedantic argument on the internet! Some dude on Instagram told me that a Sambo jacket (kurtka) is exactly the same as a BJJ or judo gi, and that every technique possible in a Sambo jacket can be done just as easily with a jiu-jitsu uniform. FALSE!

Okay, this isn’t just me being pedantic. There’s a valuable lesson to be learned here about grip fighting in jacketed wrestling. The kurtka (Sambo uniform) has reinforced pleats in the shoulders that make for excellent grips that give a massive amount of control over your opponent’s shoulder. Combined with a high collar grip, this becomes one of the most overpowered throwing position in martial arts.

This shoulder grip is also used extensively in shuai jiao (Chinese jacketed wrestling) , Bokh (Mongolian jacketed wrestling) and several other sleeveless jacketed wrestling styles.

A kurtka is basically a hybrid of a judo gi and a shuai jiao jacket, offering extra grips for a more nuanced grip fighting game, and a wider variety of high amplitude throws that can be performed more easily in many cases.
