Hydrangeas prefer acidic soil. However, the water we use to water them, whether from a tap or a well, is often hard and alkaline. This can make the soil alkaline, especially if you don't add enough organic matter.
In alkaline soils, hydrangeas can't absorb nutrients, which is what causes leaf spots.
