Joe Lovano on multi-dimensional playing
One thing that has always struck me about Joe Lovano's playing is that he always seems to assume a role - a sound and style - that fits the musical situation.
So during my interview with Joe, I asked about that aspect of his approach. I said that it feels like he is assuming a role. His immediate response was that we're actors when we perform or record, and he proceeded to expand on that thought.
His thoughts should open up the ears of those who sound exactly the same each time they play regardless of their musical environment.
