Ron Carter on practicing to perfection
Deep listening is critical to both performing and practicing a musical instrument. In fact, if you don't hear the reality of your playing and ignore the mistakes, you run the risk of ingraining flaws into your permanent playing technique.
In my interview with Ron Carter, Ron told the story of calling up a student and telling him what he was practicing. Ron explained to the student that he was listening deeply and accepting no flaws in the simple exercise he was doing.
