You are special. This moment, with you, is special. Not just rare, but unique. Because even if we meet again and you wear what you’re wearing and sit where you’re sitting and I wear what I’m wearing and drink what I’m drinking and we repeat everything exactly, word for word, sip for sip, it wouldn’t be the same. It can’t be. Because even if we do everything the same, we ourselves won’t be the same. We’ll be older by a week, month, year, sure – and even if we weren’t, this place won’t be the same – that woman behind you won’t be there, coughing into her scarf, and even if she were, that child won’t be on that bicycle, and even if he were, these birds won’t be singing these songs and that dog won’t be lifting that leg and that leaf won’t be falling from that branch and those clouds won’t be making those shapes and so on and so on and so you see? These things came together just once – for us.

Look around.
See the people.
How many of them have crossed your path, somewhere, at some time?
In a different country, maybe, even – one of you on vacation, the other going to work.
And now you’re looking at them, on a screen.
What do you think they’re doing right now?
Are they going to work?
Or are they on vacation?
Are they even still alive?
And is the place where we crossed paths even still there?
What does it look like now?
These things don’t stay the same forever, of course.
They’ve changed before, and will again.
And so will we.
