You are special. So is this moment, here, with you – not just rare, but unique. Because (think about it now) even if we meet again and you wear exactly what you’re wearing and sit exactly where you’re sitting and I lean exactly like I’m leaning and drink exactly what I’m drinking and we repeat everything word for word and sip for sip it wouldn’t be the same – it can’t be – because for one thing we’ll be older by a week, OK, sure, but also, that woman coughing there in the corner won’t be there in the corner coughing, and that child won’t be on that bicycle, and these birds won’t be singing these songs and that dog won’t be lifting that leg and yonder leaf won’t be falling from yonder branch and those clouds won’t be making those etc etc, and so you see? All these things came together just once – for us.
Here.
Now.
Look around.
See the people.
How many of them have crossed your path before?
In a different country, maybe, even – one of you on vacation, the other going to work.
And now you’re looking at them on a screen.
What do you think they’re doing now?
Going to work?
On vacation?
Are they even still alive?
And that place where our paths crossed, is it still there?
What does it look like now?
After all, things don’t stay the same forever, of course.
They’ve changed before.
And will again.
And look – so do we.
