Parallel compression is like the backbone of modern music production. Popularly known as New York style compression, it is the act of sending a dry signal to a bus or send channel and heavily compressing it with a very high compression ratio, then subtly adding the heavily compressed signal together with the dry one.
This adds body, weight, energy and punch to the overall sound. This is very common on Drums, Bass and vocals production.
The most popular tool to achieve this with is the 1176 compressor and most commonly the Blue strip 1176 that offers the option of engaging all the available Ratio options the plugin has to offer at once.
In this video i put the pulsar smasher plugin and the UAD 1176 Rev A in a fierce battle to decide which is the King of parallel compression.
I experiment with this two plugins on
1. Drums
2. Bass and
3. Vocals
Interestingly, all achieve the same result but with different sounds and feelings and behaved differently on different materials.
Anyways, the decision on which sounded best is highly subjective. You only have to watch the video to the end to decide which works best for you
