This workshop will introduce topics in bioinformatics, beginning with discussing what bioinformatics is and where it is applied in science. Next, bioinformatics and computational biology will be discussed and compared. Importantly, the subfields in bioinformatics will be discussed, along with a lesson on basic terms and concepts in biology. The last few sections of the workshop will cover topics that involve data types (FASTA, SAM/BAM, among others), the purpose of data analysis and the general workflow of conducting analysis, and some commonly used software tools and programming languages in the field. This workshop will not be very technical, and there will be images of various data types and explanations of key terms.

WHAT IS SUPERPOSITION TORONTO:
Superposition Toronto is a youth-led organization with the mission of bridging the gender gap in STEM by creating educational opportunities and supportive communities. PRESENTER BIO:
Teodora Tockovska is a senior bioinformatics analyst at the Princess Margaret Cancer Research Tower where she conducts data analysis for customers, runs pipelines, and reads scientific literature. She acquired her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Toronto, where she was first introduced to the field of bioinformatics. She loved combining biology with programming, and decided to pursue a career in bioinformatics. She completed her Master of Bioinformatics degree at the University of Guelph, learning various topics in the field and conducting several research projects.
Superposition Toronto's free virtual workshops, panels, and events are open internationally to students of all ages and gender identities.
