This video demonstrates and explains the difference between automation and modulation in Ableton Live. In addition to the description, the differences are demonstrated in a practical fashion.
The device utilized is the Wavetable synthesizer. The modulated parameter is the low-pass filter, although any automatable parameter can be utilized with this process.
