Starting my grill twice a day sometimes I'd go broke buying fire starters. This works best with Royal Oak Lump from your local Walmart or where ever.
I have an alternate chimney method for non Royal Oak brand coals and I know what your thinking. NEVER USE CHARCOAL CHIMNEY TO START YOUR KAMADO. And to that I say hogwash. It’s all in how you use it.
Things you’ll need:
1) A sheet of news paper
2) A charcoal chimney starter (optional)
3) Lighter or matches
Load up your coals however you normally do. Wad up a piece of newspaper like so. Make a hole and shove that paper in the center. Loosely pack some coals around it. Light it. Blow on it for a minute or two, Go drink a beer. Come back and check.
Alternate charcoal chimney method.
I do agree with NOT loading a full chimney than lighting it than waiting for that red glowing inferno than dumping into your Kamado as that will most likely cause uneven heating and most likely cracking your fire box or worse.
BUT this way works well for me when I am forced to use other brands. Wad up your single piece of newspaper and shove it in the bottom of the chimney. Only load the chimney 1/4 of the way full or less. Light the paper and let it sit a few minutes. Check occasionally as you don’t want a screaming inferno. You are looking to just have the outside corners of the coals lit to give you a starting point. Once the coals look like this than you can dump in the center of your fire box and position as needed.
