You may be super smart in your field, but if you come across as stressed out and distracted, you won't receive much support. Especially in times of stress and change, developing professional presence is essential. Here are three key components that can help:
Altitude — I learned about this from Tom Henschel, president of Essential Communications and host of the popular podcast The Look & Sound of Leadership. Having the right altitude is coming at something from the same POV of the person you're talking to. When you practice the right altitude, it creates confidence.
Emotional IQ — How socially smart are you? Do you stop and think about how other people are feeling? When people make mistakes, do you beat them up for it or do you encourage risk-taking as long as they learn from their mistakes? A high emotional IQ creates calm and inspires creativity.
Power of Three — Twelve points is actually zero points, because no one is going to remember more than three to five points that you're trying to make. Three seems to be the magic number that people can remember.
"Every leader needs to clearly explain the top three things the organization is working on. If you can't, then you're not leading well." - Jeffrey Immelt, CEO General Electric
