Ever thought of why you can never learn algorithms. Or when you try using algorithms on an actual solve, you just somehow forget it? If this is you, then this video is perfect for you. I am AA Cubing, and today I will teach you how to memorise algorithms faster and easier!
You’ve probably seen a lot of videos on youtube about learning algorithms faster, and all they mention are recognising common triggers like sexy moves, sledgehammers etc. Well in this video, I will not be mentioning that advice because although that advice may come quite useful, that advice will not make you better at an actual solve.
Now here is my first advice: learn a better algorithm instead of an easier algorithm. Don’t learn bad inverted algorithms, but instead learn ones that will make you faster. If you are right handed, don’t learn a left handed algorithm. Although it might be easier to memorise it at first, it will be harder for you to memorise a good algorithm when you try to get faster. “Doing stuff properly for the first time rather than finding a shortcut IS the shortcut.” I have personally also experienced these before, and let me tell you, it will be way better to learn a better algorithm the first time.
Tip #2, drill your algorithm once you learnt it. Let’s say I want to learn the t-perm, I have just executed 5 times without looking at my cheat sheet. But does that mean I really know the algorithm, what happens if it actually comes out on an actual solve? Well most of the time you’re going to forget the algorithm, and you’re just going to sit there with your mouth wide open, staring at the timer as time passes by.
What’s the solution to this awkwardness? Drill your algorithms. A lot. Make sure you are able to do the algorithm without thinking about the algorithm. If you have to think, then you are using another type of memory rather than muscle memory. Once the algorithm is actually muscle memory, drill the alg 10-50 times. Try and see if you are able to perform the algorithm under 3 seconds, then 2 seconds, then 1 second. This is the most effective way to not freeze when you see a case.
Tip #3, don’t learn too many algorithms at a time. Don’t practice too many algorithms at a single time, you will be more likely to forget them and stutter doing an actual solve. Try this: see how long it will take you to learn an algorithm and implement it into an actual solve. This will allow you to know what your limits are, and instead of aiming to learn like 10 algorithms in 1 hour, try and FULLY learn a single algorithm in your own time. This way, you won’t actually forget an algorithm, and will be able to learn them more efficiently.
