Etna 1669 - Places and Consequences (Eruption Documentary - Part Two)
The 1669 eruption was Etna's most significant event in recorded history, as well as the most destructive for the population living on its slopes.
It devastated 13 towns, completely overturned the urban layout of Etna's southern slope, and produced a 17-kilometer-long lava flow, reaching the city of Catania and the sea.
To mark the 350th anniversary of that eruption, I wanted to create this project, which sought to provide a detailed account of this event. Through 3D animations, a reconstruction of the city of Catania before the eruption, visits to the sites, and information on the interventions that accompanied this historic event, I have compiled a detailed account.
This documentary is the result of over six months of work, spent creating the animations, researching information, filming the various sites, and subsequently editing. All sources are listed at the end of the video, and I recommend consulting them all, as reading them reveals truly unexpected things.
This is the second part of the documentary, which discusses the effects that eruption had on the territory and the population, but above all, it is a journey through the places where traces of that eruptive activity are still visible today.
