Did you know that an ordinary air conditioner installed in your apartment or office not only makes your life more comfortable, but can also bring a lot of inconvenience and even harm your health? In addition to the risk of catching a common cold while sitting under a stream of icy air, there is another danger in these household appliances. Air conditioners and their internal parts are a breeding ground for various microorganisms. Most of them are not dangerous to humans, but some are capable of inducing an infection called Legionnaires' disease, or Legionellosis.
The name Legionnaires' Disease is associated with the 1976 outbreak in Philadelphia of a severe pneumonia-like respiratory illness. V
The disease is caused by the bacteria Legionella, which is widespread in natural aquatic systems. More than 90% of cases of the disease are associated with the species L. pneumophila.
However, the most likely source of disease is ventilation and air conditioning systems, artificial aquatic systems that create conditions conducive to the reproduction and spread of Legionella.
These bacteria live and multiply in water systems at a temperature of 20-50 degrees (the optimum temperature is 35 degrees).
The incubation period of legionellosis is on average 5-7 days. The most studied is legionella pneumonia, that is, a disease that occurs when a pathogen enters the lungs of a person. As a rule, the disease develops very quickly. It all starts with a moderate headache and malaise, and then - on average in a day - there is a sharp rise in temperature to 39-40 degrees, accompanied by severe chills, a sharp increase in headache, muscle pain. Mortality reaches 20%, which is largely due to the late stages of diagnosis and the severity of the disease.
