In the 17th century, before the name "Prince Rupert's drops" appeared, they were known as "Batavia Tears" (Batavia is the old name for the Netherlands) because they first began to be mass-produced there. Most likely, such glass drops were known to glassblowers from time immemorial, but they attracted the attention of scientists rather late: somewhere in the middle of the 17th century, when Prince Rupert returned after a long exile to England and brought with him unusual glass drops, which he presented to Charles II ... The king handed them over for research to the Royal Society of London in order to unravel their mystery, but scientists have not found an answer. What so excited everyone who saw this glass phenomenon, and continues to amaze to this day?
