World War II is over, and the world begins to dig out of the rubble. The UN is formed and the hope for a peaceful world is shared by many. But amidst the efforts to recover, events continue to polarize the world into two distinct camps: western democracy vs socialist/communist autocracy. The rise of this polarization leads to the first "proxy wars"--fought by others, but supported by the two major players. The year is rounded out by the trial and punishment of former Nazi leaders in Nuremberg. The Cold War intensifies.
