Frontlines of Democracy: Safeguarding Human Rights in Kenya’s 2022
Elections is a culmination of over 4 years of the Independent Medico-Legal Unit’s engagement in the 2022 electoral process, and in particular security management. Preceding the elections, IMLU took a number of preventive and responsive measures to ensure that Kenyans exercised their democratic right in a safe and secure environment. The prevention approach focused on strengthening the capacity of the citizenry and the duty bearers, mainly the National Police Service (NPS) whose main role is to prevent, control, detect and investigate crime. While responding to human rights violations, we have provided holistic support to survivors of police actions, including medical and legal support.
