How to Have a Mature Relationship

1. Address the needs of the relationship first
Selfishness has no room in a relationship and the idea of being in a commitment with someone means that you have to think and decide not only for yourself but for the other person, too. Maturity means making the right decisions and working on goals meant to benefit not just yourself or your significant other. These goals should be focused and be based on what both of you wants and needs and how the consequences can affect your future.
2. Forgive and forget
Nothing ruins relationships faster than holding onto the past. If you have chosen to forgive your partner for something and continue your relationship then you must put it in the past.
3. Don’t Sacrifice Other Relationships
Many people drift apart from their friends during a relationship. While this is understandable during the initial ‘honeymoon’ period, it is important to remember that your friends and family have been in your life for far longer than your partner. Mature people make sure they have a happy balance between all of their loved ones.
4. YOU DEVELOP NEW INTERESTS AS A COUPLE THAT YOU BOTH ENJOY
Entering a partnership requires compromise and creating space for new activities that you can do together. Developing interests you can do together and sharing new experiences will bring you closer and allow you to grow in your relationship.
5. Work on inner guidelines; refrain from blaming
Discovering our inner adult means finding out what our guiding values and principles are in order to stay clear about how to manage ourselves during demanding times. Look at yourself first to see what part they have played in the difficulty and what’s within their control in order to bring something constructive to the situation. The inner adult refrains from finding fault with another but rather considers how they have contributed to the upset they are in.
6. Learn the values of trust, respect, and sincerity
Learn the values of the most important ingredients for a happy and healthy relationship. Trust your partner that they have the strength to fight for what you have. Respect them as a person and as a human being. Appreciate sincerity and learn to express genuine love and affection towards each other.
7. Don’t Feel Like You Need To Always Be In Contact With your Partner
Mature people do not need the constant contact in their relationships, as they have their own busy lives. They are secure enough to trust their partner when they are not with them and find non-stop emailing and texting to be a waste of their own time.
8. DON’T FEEL THE NEED TO CHANGE YOUR PARTNER
Being in a mature relationship means accepting each other as you are. Sure we all have quirky traits but we learn to accept them as part of the bigger package. The time you spend trying to change your partner would be better spent finding the right partner.
9. Be responsible for solving your own problems
Don’t expect others to solve your problems or step in to take over when tasks are demanding. Similarly don’t jump in to do this for others when we see them struggling. Learning how not to do for others what they can learn to do for themselves is one of the golden rules of adult maturity and to become more mature in a relationship.
