ABSTRACT
Current commercial products and approaches to multilevel security (MLS) do not fully meet the requirements of environments requiring high robustness. An emerging design paradigm for safety/security-critical systems - Multiple Independent Levels of Security/Safety (MILS) - based on high-assurance separation kernels and middleware currently under development, is intended to provide a modular, dependable, and certifiable basis for future high-assurance secure systems. Potential users familiar with past MLS operating systems may have inflated expectations for the functionality of near-term products. Such expectations are reinforced by the practice of casually referring to MILS separation kernels as "secure operating systems." The MILS community must move quickly to establish an architectural framework to provide the constraints necessary to create systems that would meet expectations - and foster the thriving MILS ecosystem envisioned by promoters and vendors.

Bio: Mr. Rance J. DeLong is a Staff Scientist at LynuxWorks and a member of the Center for Advanced Study and Practice of Information Assurance at Santa Clara University. Mr. DeLong has twenty-eight years of research, engineering and management experience with security-related technologies, software engineering, and product development. He currently is an architect and Staff Scientist for security and assurance for LynuxWorks' MILS Separation Kernel. Mr. DeLong has a BS in Physics/Math and a BA in Philosophy from Moravian College and has done extensive postgraduate coursework at Lehigh and Stanford Universities.
