Archaeology News #8 Oldest Stone Tools Europe, Ramesses Statue, Tobacco Vases
In Korolevo, Ukraine archaeologists uncovered prehistoric stone tools in the 1970s. Recently, the samples of rock where the tools were found were dated and determined to be 1.4 MILLION years old! This makes these stone tools currently the oldest found in all of Europe. Despite a lack of remains, experts believe they likely were crafted by Homo Erectus and navigated to the area of Ukraine from the East.
During excavations in the ancient city of Hermopolis, archaeologists finally uncovered the upper half, lost portion of the Ramesses statue initially discovered in the 1930s. Once the entire statue is reassembled, they expect the total statue of Ramesses II to be around 23 feet tall.
In Guatemala, in the region called Cotzumalhuapa at the archaeological site called El Baúl , archaeologists discovered three 1,000 year old vases that contained traces of nicotine inside. They believe that the vases would have held tobacco infused liquid which was consumed during ceremonies and rituals. This is among the oldest physical evidence of tobacco use in mesoamerica.
