Aerial Autumn in 4K. The Colors Of Fall In The VA/MD Area From The Air
From October through November 2023, I documented the transformation of fall foliage across Virginia and Maryland using my DJI Mini 2 drone. Over eight weeks, I captured the progressive shift of colors as autumn settled across the region's diverse landscapes.
Beginning in early October, I recorded the first subtle changes as deciduous trees began their seasonal transition. My flights covered various elevations and terrains, capturing how colors changed at different heights and in various microclimates throughout both states.
As weeks passed, I expanded my filming northward, covering a range of environments across the two states. This approach allowed me to document the complete color progression from early yellows to vibrant reds and oranges, and finally to late-season browns.
The DJI Mini 2 performed exceptionally well in autumn's variable wind conditions, providing stable footage throughout the project. I utilized vertical reveals, slow panning shots, and programmed orbits to showcase the landscape's changing palette from multiple perspectives.
In post-production, I processed all footage in Final Cut Pro, applying CinePacks Mavic 2 Pro LUTs to enhance color accuracy while maintaining natural appearance. I organized the material chronologically to demonstrate how autumn's colors swept through the region over time.
The final compilation presents a comprehensive aerial view of the seasonal transformation across Virginia and Maryland's varied topography, entirely captured from above.
