Michele Cometa teaches Cultural History and Visual Culture at the University of Palermo. He has been a fellow of the CNR, DAAD, of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (Williamstown, MA) and Research Associate Professor at the Italian Academy (Columbia University, NY). He has held courses and seminars in various Italian and foreign universities and research institutes. He founded and coordinated the international PhD in European Cultural Studies/Europäische Kultustudien. He has worked on the theory of the tragic and tragedy, on the culture and literature of Goethe's age, on biology and literature, on ecphrasis, and, recently, on autopathography.
His most recent publications include: Archaeologies of Visual Culture. Gazes, Optical Devices and Images from 17th to 20th Century Literature (V&R Unipress, 2016); Perché le storie aiutano a vivere (Cortina, 2017); Il Trionfo della morte di Palermo. Literarische Einfühlung: A Reappraisal
Abstract:
At the origins of the German debate on Einfühlung lie not only visual, optical and spatial issues (Vischer, Lipps) but exquisitely literary phenomena. In particular one genre, that of tragedy, and two categories, namely das Tragische and die Tragik, are the subject of extensive reflection. There is thus a literary birth of the theory of Einfühlung, and if today we have extraordinary analyses of empathy in the novel (Keen) the question remains why the theme of the tragic and tragedy, which lies at the center of the early interests of the psychology of Einfühlung (Lipps, Volkelt, Groos), has almost disappeared from the horizon of the study of empathy, while it is obviously essential to understanding the debate on "negative” and “mixed” emotions.
