“Empathy and Literary Form within Russian Formalism”
Serge Tchougounnikov has a post-graduate degree in linguistics (1995, University of Pyatigorsk, Russia), a PHD diploma in sciences of language (2002, EHESS, Paris) and a habilitation to direct research (2012, University of Paris-7) on the emergence of European psycholinguistics between Germany and Russia. He is a senior lecturer (MCF HDR) at the University of Bourgogne, Dijon; he is the author of two monographs and numerous articles on the history and epistemology of European linguistics and poetics (19th-20th centuries), in particular on formalism and structuralism. He has co-organised eight international conferences and numerous workshops on formalism and psychological models in the European humanities. His current research focuses on the interaction between psychology and the human sciences (linguistics, poetics, aesthetics).
Empathy and literary Formalism : some convergences.
Abstract:
There is a preconceived notion that psychological interpretation is opposed to the formalist approach, which excludes any recourse to the process of empathy. According to this idea, the purely formal approach focuses solely on the relationships between the elements of the aesthetic object, whereas the psychological approach emphasises the part played by the subject, his feelings and his emotional projections in the perception of the object. However, a close examination of the formalist positions reveals conceptualisations that bring them closer to the theories of empathic aesthetics of the time. The aim here is to compare certain positions of psychological aesthetics based on empathy with the fundamental concepts of the Germanic and Russian formalist currents in order to extract the main theoretical convergences. The empathic potential of the concept of form, posited by the formalist approach, will be central to this analysis.
