The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler in 'A Scandal in Belgravia'.
"But you've acquired something that's more danger than protection. Do you know what it is?"
"Yes. But I don't understand it."
This edit has been under construction for about five months, but the inspiration for it appeared years ago. It was shortly after I began editing when I conceived of a video based around Irene Adler and, by extension, my favourite episode (then and now), 'A Scandal in Belgravia'. It was so special to me, and such a massive task to do justice to it, that I put it off in favour of other projects before I could focus on illustrating what I hoped was an okay portrayal of it.
In that time, my view of Sherlock and Ms Adler's relationship changed and developed. It was something so interesting to me that it was second only to the relationship of Sherlock and John. At the beginning of my appreciation of ASiB, I looked up to Ms Adler's character - I found her independence, intelligence and initiative to be of such a unique strain. But a greater influence that withheld strongly over time was forging connections with Sherlock's behaviour. His detachment and even disquiet around the notion of sexual relations was so utterly reflected in myself that there were times that I had to remind myself that we are not the same person in that area. Upon reflection, it is odd that my alarm over relationships was a significant cause for my care for Sherlock.
What resulted from this was not creating a video entirely oriented around Ms Adler, who was (and perhaps remains) one of my favourite characters when I conceived of it, but of Sherlock's relationship with her. My view of their relationship has also evolved to include John, who I now perceive had a part in it as well.
Anyway, moving on from anecdotes. The event that finally inspired me to create the edit was considering the heart/love metaphor between Sherlock and John, and deciding to apply it to Sherlock and Irene, particularly as phones are a running motif throughout ASiB. I arbitrarily stumbled upon perhaps an apt metaphor for my own view of Sherlock and Irene's entire relationship. Each word and action related to that phone is indeed a clue.
