Alex Nieto Rises: La Mesha Irizzary
August 22, 2014- We the community that believes that the officers who shot and killed Alex Nieto, violated his civil rights and should be held accountable in the the same way that we as citizens are asked to be accountable for our mistakes or transgressions.
There is a real imbalance of opportunity and accountability in this country.
One of the amazing things about SF and the entire Bay Area is that we are given the time space and freedom to look deep into our character to think, dream and create lasting social change. And this fight for justice for Alex Nieto will help us set the tone for a new day in SF.
La Mesha Irizzary had been doing community building and engagement training for SFPD before her son Idriss Stelly, was shot and killed by SFPD.
La Mesha can still talk about restoring humanity even after suffering one of the greatest tragedies one could expereince. And if a mother can do that, extend compassion into a space of deep pain, just like Nelson Mandela did after he spent most of his adult life in jail. Then don't we have a responsibility to help restore humanity too?
