Lauren Hoffman - The Chemical [Remix]
Here we are in a suddenly different reality. Social distancing. Self-isolation. How are you holding up? How are you spending your time, and staying sane? For me, music is what soothes me, keeps me focused and in the moment - like meditation - and connects me to the feeling that I am part of something bigger than myself and my limited individual consciousness.
So, this is a remix that I made from the "stems" of "The Chemical", which was mixed by Ryan Freeland for my album Mercury Girls . The stems were 6 stereo WAV tracks: drums, bass, vocals, piano, keyboard (mellotron), and electric guitar (which I didn't end up using). I took those and manipulated them in myriad ways to create this new version of the song - so fun! I've included the visuals of the pro-tools waveforms for those of you who might be interested - can you match what you're hearing to what you're seeing?
Please note that "The Chemical" is about opioid addiction, and though I wrote it in the first person, it is not about me. I have struggled with nicotine addiction, but that's it. I have also experienced the feeling of opiates, and I can understand how one might easily want to feel that way all the time, because it's weird and hard and confusing to be human!
But be careful, please, with the substances you use. Use them wisely, and with love for yourself and your body and the one precious life you get to live in it.
