Ever wondered what common mistake could jeopardize your residency permit renewal in Italy? Today, I'll reveal a crucial tip that could save you from potential pitfalls. Recently, a client reached out to me after visiting the Questura, Italy's immigration office, revealing they had mistakenly surrendered their old residency permit. This seemingly innocent error can have serious consequences!
In this video, I explain why you should never give away your old residency permit until you receive your new one. This rule applies not only in Italy but across many European countries. Here's the correct process to follow:
• Submit your application kit at the post office.
• Attend your fingerprint appointment but DO NOT surrender your old permit.
• Only during your final appointment, when you receive your new permit, should you hand over the old one.
If a police officer or immigration official asks for your old permit prematurely, even if it's expired, you must refuse. Always keep it along with the ricevuta (receipt) from the post office until you get an SMS notification to collect your new permit.
It's crucial to avoid certain pitfalls, such as applying for a re-entry visa if you leave Italy during the renewal process. This can signal to the immigration authorities that you are not interested in maintaining your residency.
