Engineers have started building a new green bridge at Turweston, located on the border of Buckinghamshire and West Northamptonshire, as part of the HS2 project.
This 5,940 square meter bridge, near Brackley, will carry a country lane and footpath over the high-speed railway. The bridge will be planted with hedgerows and vegetation to provide cover for wildlife as they pass over one of the longest and deepest cuttings along the HS2 route.
Part of a wider effort to improve rail connections between London and the West Midlands, this green bridge is one of sixteen planned for the project. It’s designed to reduce noise and disruption for local residents while creating space for more freight and local services on the existing rail network.
With the foundations now complete, engineers are using a 600-tonne crawler crane to lift thirty-six massive steel beams, each weighing up to 105 tonnes, to form the 99-meter-wide structure. These beams will support a concrete deck, which will hold 2,700 cubic meters of earth as part of the landscaping.
Once the structure is in place, excavation will continue beneath the bridge to complete the cutting, which will stretch for 1.5 miles between the Westbury and Turweston viaducts, further enhancing the smooth operation of the high-speed railway.
