Construction of Britain’s longest rail bridge enters final stretch
Assembly of the 2.1-miles long deck of HS2’s longest bridge – the Colne Valley viaduct – has entered the final stretch, following the completion of the final lake span.
Over 90% of the 1,000 individually pre-cast deck segments have now been installed, and all four of the lake spans completed.
Work to install the viaduct’s remaining deck segments continues at pace, followed by the installation of the deck edge parapets and noise barriers, before we hand over to Rail Systems for the next major phase of the build programme.
The huge structure – which will be stretches across a series of lakes and waterways between Hillingdon and the M25 – will be the UK's longest railway bridge, and almost a kilometre longer than the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland.
It has been engineered to carry trains travelling at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.
Once complete, HS2 will provide faster and far more reliable journeys between London and Birmingham, with trains running on conventional lines further north. It will also double rail capacity between the UK’s two biggest cities – relieving the most congested southern part of the West Coast Main Line, creating more capacity for local and freight services.
