The false Left vs. Right paradigm -- ALAN WATT

In politics, this tends to take the shape of the Right vs. Left paradigm: the dialectical technique of the tennis court, where people are played left and right, and from the right to the left, from the left to the right, and so on and so forth. Under this false paradigm, democratic choice is limited to a set of coopted and controlled options, some on the “right”, others on the “left”. In this, it will sometimes be that the “right” is economically liberal and socially conservative, whereas the “left” is economically conservative and socially liberal. But, even more often, the “right” and the “left” will tend to converge on all that really matters, and diverge only on technical details, on so-called “social issues”, and on slogans and catchphrases.
When people get caught up in this Left vs. Right game, they tend to forget that the only real divide in politics is that between freedom and democracy, progress and development on the one side – and, arbitrarity, corruption and debasement on the other. That’s the reality principle by which all parties and political proposals should ultimately be judged.
The Right vs. Left paradigm actually has roots in the feudal system of old Europe, where the feudal hold over society was sustained by the use of guilds, lodges, associations and crafts corporations of the “right path” or the “right hand”, and the “left path” or the “left hand”: meaning these followed ancient cultic traditions bound, in the former case, to conservatism, mortification and hierarchy and, in the latter, to anarchy, sensual liberation and pleasure cults.
Also, if you look at old aristocratic coats-of-arms, you will notice most of them feature a bird of prey, representing the aristocratic house or interest. The bird is protected by a shield, and it flies with its two wings, and that’s where the “left wing” and the “right wing” come from.
So, if you’re a “right winger” or a “left winger”, you’re just helping the flight of the eagle, or hawk, or whatever that may be. Perhaps it’s the flight of the vulture, that seems to be more to the point in a great many instances.
As I say, the only real demarcation in politics is that between LIBERTY vs. tyranny. And, in so, that between freedom, democracy, progress and economic development -- and bondage, degradation, backwardness and underdevelopment.
Step outside of the box and think for yourself, as the free individual you inherently are.
