What began with a gift in 1912 at the Tidal Basin now spans four weeks throughout Washington, DC, and neighboring communities in Maryland and Virginia.
3,000 cherry trees were given as a gift of friendship to the United States from Japan. In March of that year, First Lady Helen Taft and the Vicountess Chinda of Japan finally planted the first trees.
Today there are nearly four thousand cherry trees planted around the Tidal Basin, along the Potomac river and on the grounds of the Washington monument and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
