Why Did Cleopatra And Octavian Go To War?
The war between Octavian and Cleopatra was the culmination of a decade-long rivalry between the two most powerful figures in the Roman world. Octavian was the adoptive son of Julius Caesar, while Cleopatra was the queen of Egypt and Caesar's lover.
The rivalry began when Antony, one of Caesar's most trusted generals, was sent to Egypt to govern the province. Antony quickly fell in love with Cleopatra and began a relationship with her. This relationship outraged Octavian, who saw it as a threat to his own power.
In 32 BC, Antony publicly announced the distribution of Roman lands under his control to Cleopatra and her children. He also legitimized Cleopatra's son, Caesarion, as the son of Caesar. These actions further angered Octavian, and he began to prepare for war.
Octavian knew that he could not simply declare war on Antony without public support. So, he began to spread propaganda against Cleopatra, portraying her as a dangerous foreign queen who was trying to corrupt Rome. He also illegally obtained Antony's will, which promised even more Roman possessions to Cleopatra's children, and exposed it to the public.
In 31 BC, Octavian and Antony met in a decisive battle at Actium. Octavian's forces were victorious, and Antony and Cleopatra were forced to flee. Antony committed suicide shortly after, and Cleopatra followed suit a year later.
With the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, Octavian became the sole ruler of the Roman world. He went on to rule for over 40 years and is considered to be one of the most successful Roman emperors in history.
