One day, Alexander and his soldiers came to Corinth and found Diogenes sunbathing naked and asleep. Alexander quoted the Iliad, saying, "To sleep the whole night through ill befits a man of counsel." Diogenes, still half asleep, quoted the very next line, "Who has people to watch over and a multitude of cares."
Alexander was not amused. He stood over Diogenes and said, "I am Alexander the great king." Diogenes replied, "I am Diogenes the dog because I fawn at those who give me anything, I yelp at those who refuse, and I set my teeth in rascals."
Alexander was taken aback by Diogenes' boldness. He asked him if there was anything he could do for him. Diogenes' reply was beyond courageous: "Stand out of my sunlight!"
Alexander was so impressed by Diogenes that he said, "If I were not Alexander, I would want to be Diogenes."
Diogenes was a true Cynic philosopher. He believed that material possessions and social status were meaningless. He advocated for a simple life lived in accordance with nature.
