This video is a short look at one approach to remove indents caused by the router bearing in the mahogany side veneers on a Red Special replica body during the making of the binding channels.
The video shows, in almost real time, the method of using steam from a clothing iron to re-expand the crushed wood fibers in the veneer. I used a paper towel folded over a few times, dipped into a glass of water and lightly wrung out. I applied only a small amount of pressure, as you might when ironing clothes, since it was the steam doing the job. The iron was set to it's highest/hottest setting. Some areas, around the horns, for example, took more time and care than the flatter areas, as illustrated in the video, but the results are much the same. This might save you from sanding through the precious amount of veneer on those sides when trying to level it back out.
