Come with me as we walk the grounds of Ulupo, an ancient heiau here in Kailua, Oahu. This is not a tourist attraction and access is limited so you're privileged to see it in this manner.
Meanings of these Hawaiian words in this video:
Heiau - is a spiritual place where offerings, worship, and ceremonies traditionally took place.
Lei - a wreath made of leaves, flower, nuts worn on a persons neck
Luau - a young kalo (taro) leaf, also known as a feast
Kuleana - responsibility and business as in a person's personal, familial business
Pau - finished, completed, done, passed on
This video will help you improve your pronunciation of these 5 words. It can be difficult to know where you need help pronouncing these words so we've made it a point to highlight the trouble areas. If you really want to improve, record yourself saying these words and compare them to how I say it. That's how you'll really know where you are and where to improve.
Hawaiian is very vowel heavy, pay close attention to each vowel. It's also important to learn how a word with multiple vowels blend together. "Heiau" is a great example of a Hawaiian word that has 4 vowels together.
Traditional native speakers are the most reliable source for authentic pronunciation. These are individuals who acquired Hawaiian as their first language through daily use with their caretakers.
