The inspiration for “Gravity” came after watching the movie “Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus,” the dirge-like music therein, and one particular quote. The documentary is about a musician (Jim White) re-visiting the Deep South of the U.S., interviewing and recording the music of disenfranchised poor people in isolated towns in the middle of nowhere. He described people who get stuck in these places with a great quote saying, “In a poor world like this, gravity seems a lot stronger. It’s pulling you down into the earth and everyday it’s a fight not to disappear. The way the gravity’s pulling you.....and you figure maybe if you’re gonna disappear you’re gonna disappear under your own terms, escaping from reality, find your own, make your own, be the guru of your own little Tibet.” I wrote the lyrics, listed below, and the music immediately afterwards. The resonant, percolating bass line was inspired by attending a live concert by Ozric Tentacles and witnessing the incredible bass playing of Brandi Wynne. All the weird synthesizer sounds and both instrumental solos are courtesy of my 1984 Roland GR-700 guitar synthesizer and G-707 guitar controller.
