Orang-oetans leven in het wild op twee eilanden in de Indische Oceaan: Borneo en Sumatra. De naam orang-oetan is afkomstig van het Maleise Orang Hutan, dat bosmens betekent. Het voedsel van de orang-oetan bestaat voornamelijk uit vruchten, boomschors en insecten, vooral mieren. De orang- oetan is een bedreigde diersoort. Mensen schieten de moeder dood om het jong te kunnen vangen. De babys worden dan als huisdier verkocht. Ook is de leefomgeving van de orang-oetans in de afgelopen jaren sterk afgenomen door houtkap, mijnbouw en bosbranden.
De orang-oetan is de enige mensaap die in Azië voorkomt. De andere mensapen, Chimpansee, Bonobo en Gorilla, leven in Afrika.
The name orangutan derives from the Malay and Indonesian phrase orang hutan, meaning "man of the forest". Orangutans spend nearly all of their time in the trees. The arms of an orangutan are twice as long as their legs. Unlike the other great apes, orangutans are not true knuckle-walkers. They walk on the ground by shuffling on their palms with their fingers curved inwards.
Orangutans feed on fruits, insects (ants), seeds and bark.
The species is critically endangered. The sharp decline of the number of orangutans has occurred mostly over the past few decades due to human activities and development.
