Coyote Den On Elementary School Property
After hearing about sightings of a mother coyote with pups, I went to investigate and found a coyote den located directly underneath a portable that's located on Marlborough Elementary School in Burnaby B.C. This portable is known as the Burnaby French Language Playschool that is directly beside the main playground just off Sanders Street. When I went late Sunday evening (May 27, 2012), I noticed the garbage cans were overflowing with leftovers giving the coyote a consistent food source. The portable was partially covered so children are unable to crawl under, but when I looked underneath with my flash light, I could see the coyotes den entrance. I proceeded to the school the next day to inform the principal of my findings and was impressed to see that the Conservation officers were already on scene when I arrived. They informed the school that the bottom of the portable needed to be completely sealed so the coyote can no longer access that area. They also said that the garbage cans currently being used need to be replaced with cans that have lids. A neighbour (Dean) took pictures of the pups playing on the ramp which is part of the play school which confirms the coyote has two pups.
