When you start out as a teacher it's almost inevitable that you'll use the Present-Practice-Produce approach, and for good reason - it tends to work very well. But it's not the only way to go about teaching, and in this video I'm going to make the case for occasionally applying what I call a 'CrossFit-style' of teaching.
Using this approach, you spend most of the lesson practicing different skills within a specific context - so you might establish the context as 'Sports' and then look at vocabulary, do some listening, and maybe write something, all within that context. There's no real Presentation, and Production is more something that happens along the way, rather than at the end of the lesson.
What are your thoughts? Do you ever have a lesson like this? Does it work? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this kind of approach?
