Storm
The Great Red Spot (on Jupiter) is not a spot. It's not a big hurricane, either - it's a ring-shaped storm (winds clocking at 430 km/h on the exterior) that has been around for the better part of two hundred years (and perhaps much longer). The interior is mostly calm, with reddish-colored haze (like smoke, or powder crystals, or fog, or some of all three) dominating. A deep narrow clearing, like a moat , surrounds the outside of the Spot, keeping the chemistry of the clouds inside separate from those outside. The Spot eats any smaller storm in its band, chews it up like wood running into a saw blade. Occasionally a big storm in the neighboring band to the south will bump spheres of influence with Great Red but so far the Spot is king of Jupiter. Maybe next century, rookie.
