In this video Thomas Sowell explains how racism took root in the US and why the issue of racism is a particular problem in the US. He explains that because of the constitution and the American founding values that argued all men were created equal lead to African Americans being dehumanised in order to justify the slavery which existed at the time.
Sowell goes on to explain the important distinction between racism and discrimination, arguing that racism is just and idea that lives in someone's head whilst discrimination is a positive action which takes place in the real world.
He argues that this is a significant point because it is possible and indeed likely that in a free market system even people who hold racist attitudes will not act in a discriminatory matter even without the compulsion of government.
Sowell argues that the reason for this is that the free market rewards competence and not racial characteristics and so there is an additional cost to discrimination. He makes the point that racists might prefer one race to another but ultimately prefer themselves to everyone else and so take action to seek profit.
