In this video we see Milton Friedman giving a lecture in 1970 where he discuses whether the USA still lives up to its founding ideals or whether its national character and spirt have changed in recent times. He argues there has been some change and the land of opportunity and freedom was becoming increasingly coercive and hostile.
He asserts strongly that the USA should primarily be a land of freedom and opportunity and that if the country continues on the trajectory of recent years there will be a point of no return for a culture and society that values freedom.
Friedman discusses the concept of golden ages throughout history noting the fact that no matter where or when they are agreed to take place that they never last very long. Around 75-150 years in his estimation, he equates this to the position the USA is in and suggests that the loss of freedom and opportunity might signal the end of the American golden age.
He also considers the actions which has led to the current environment blaming law designed for special interest getting entrenched in the culture and never being repealed.
