Games with worlds made of small cubes, like Minecraft, trick their players into believing the world is filled with cubes when really most of it is empty. They do this by only filling with cubes the areas that the player can see. When a player breaks a cube, a new one appears under making it seem like it was always there when really it was not. This is 100% necessary for optimisation, otherwise the games would be very laggy.
