RCTI (short for Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia) is a private television network in Indonesia, owned by Media Nusantara Citra (MNC). RCTI is the first private television network in Indonesia.
It was originally founded as a joint venture, owned by Bimantara Citra (69.82%) and Rajawali Wirabhakti Utama (30.18%). RCTI first aired on August 13, 1988, and was officially launched on August 24, 1989, at 1:30 PM WIB. At that time, RCTI broadcasts could only be accessed by subscribers who owned a decoder and paid a monthly subscription. RCTI discontinued its decoders in late 1989. The government permitted RCTI to broadcast nationally free-to-air in 1990, but this only materialized in late 1991 after establishing RCTI Bandung on May 1, 1991. Since October 2003, RCTI has been owned by Media Nusantara Citra, a media group that also owns GTV and MNCTV.
Broadcasting Permit
RCTI received its broadcasting permit on January 1, 1987, in Jakarta and its surrounding areas using a decoder. RCTI was established on August 21, 1987, in Jakarta, and built on 10 hectares of land.
RCTI began its commercial broadcasts and was inaugurated by President Soeharto on August 24, 1989, at the RCTI Studio in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, covering the Greater Jakarta area. At that time, RCTI broadcasts were limited to subscribers with decoders in the Greater Jakarta area. Although it broadcast locally in Jakarta, RCTI's status at the time was a subscription television station, not a local television station. Although RCTI was still a subscription television station in Jakarta, it aired advertisements for prominent products. One year later, on August 24, 1990, RCTI began terrestrial broadcasts throughout Indonesia. Initially, RCTI only aired foreign programs because the cost was cheaper than producing them in-house, which would have been much more expensive.
