Miami, Florida September 20 — “No Rush” is the aptly titled name of this upcoming exhibit,
consisting of works by Miami based artist Gustavo Oviedo. “No Rush” is what Oviedo christened
his first modestly sized boat, and those runabouts that have replaced it in the past decade. As
his practice has evolved, these vessels have each served to become his principle studio. During
the course of these 10 years, his approach has expanded, being done outside of the traditional
confines of a static space, embracing the bountiful, open waves of South Florida. He fearlessly
plunges the watery depths for his inspiration, and correlating process of art making.
On view, will be pieces made in a wide variety of media; including painting, drawing, vinyl
collage, video, and mixed media installation, (many with found objects retrieved from his
ongoing explorations). Since he first embarked upon his voyages of discovery —
circumnavigating, deep sea diving, and salvaging— his understanding and appreciation of a
highly fragile ecosystem has developed, and significantly altered the focus of his creative
output.
Actively engaging with multilayered aspects of the marine environment (in ways both organic
and man made) informs Oviedo’s use of divergent materials and aesthetics. Waves, coral,
clouds, shifting currents, and sea life, all find fresh forms in his latest paintings and drawings.
His vinyl collage compositions of biomorphic shapes in fluorescent hues, are reminiscent of
reefs teeming with life. In the installation pieces, Oviedo meticulously assembles collections of
flotsam and jetsam found on the sea bed and surface, vintage charts and maps, souvenirs, and
bric a brac, all related in some way to mariner lore. Presented together here, he creates unique
narratives to share his aquatic adventures .
