Counting monomials
Given an integer n, how many ways are there of expressing n as a sum of 3 non-negative integers? This is a classical type of counting problem that can be approached in many ways. We will approach it via counting monomials in variables x,y,z and using the technique of generating functions which here gives rise to some very interesting mathematics. It naturally extends to many similar problems.
