On March 23rd, 2021, a 400-meter container ship turned 90 degrees in a sandstorm and wedged itself across the Suez Canal. For the next six days, twelve percent of global trade stopped moving. A single yellow excavator at the bow of a 224,000-ton ship became the most photographed image on Earth.

But the canal itself was already an impossibility. It was dug by hand. Around one hundred thousand Egyptian fellahin died building it. It has been closed three times in modern history. And it has carried more economic weight than any other 193 kilometers of water on the planet.

In this documentary, discover the engineering miracle that took ten years to dig and one ship to halt — from the corvée laborers who carved it through the desert in the 1860s, to the Yellow Fleet of fourteen ships stranded for eight years in the Great Bitter Lake, to the modern shipping crisis that has emptied its waters once again.

Take a breath. Stay a while.
