Stepan Afanasyevich Saenko, a native of Poltava, became famous as one of the most brutal Chekists and commandants of the concentration camp in Kharkov. Born in 1886, he began his career with petty crimes and later headed the Red Guard detachment. Saenko became known for his torture and executions, running a camp on Tchaikovskaya Street, where people were tortured to death. His cruelty went down in history, leaving a mark in literature and people's memories. Saenko died in 1973, living out his last years quietly and unnoticed.
