LiDAR uses ultraviolet, visible and near infrared radiations, shooting out a bunch of laser pulses that bounce back into the sensor and the time taken by them to return is used to calculate the distance. This has major practicality in the field of 3D scanning where each pulse can correspond to a point in the 3D space, which can later be used to generate a polygonal mesh. Additional technologies like photogrammetry can enhance the output.

Modern smartphones, especially the pro variants of the iPhone have LiDAR sensors built into their camera modules, which can be utilized for 3D scanning using apps like @polycam3d and later exported into other 3D software like Blender or Unreal Engine for renders or games.
